Electrified Hydrogen Trucks for Owner Operators

In December 2016 the beginning of the fun times of the auto transport industry, the Startup Nikola unveiled its hydrogen-electric truck in a very inspirational way which gives more positive insights into the entire auto transport industry.

The shift of the auto transport industry is going disrupted massively with this new technology and infrastructure implemented, so please don’t miss the opportunity to learn more here.

First and foremost, this a detailed blog post with some sneak peaks into some trucks.

So let’s start off by mentioning that 2 auto transport products are going to be released specifically one off road UTV truck which has been named Nikola Zero and the Electrified-Hydrogen Truck Nikola One, Nikola Two.

The battery pack has an amazing density energy with their innovation and technology which 2 packages from 72kW (200miles) and 107kW(300miles) and guess what? The vehicle is completely silent.

Agreement Ryder Systems Inc

Ryder Systems Inc are going to be servicing, warranting, selling and helping Nikola in 800 locations all across US, Canada and Mexico. Thanks to that agreement they already have pre-ordered approximately 4 billion $.

Fill-in of the trucks

The answer for fill-in of the trucks is building the infrastructure by Nikola, so their solution is integration & control of  production, transport, distribution, storage, selling, prices.

On site conversion through hydrolysis from solar energy, with on site storage. The next step will be transporting the hydrogen from the onsite to the station.

The initial plan is to build 364 hydrogen stations with constructions beginning in 2018, stations being already opened 2019.

How are they going to build the trucks?

They have an investor – Fitzgerald, actually, an immediate assembly line – not a massive facility but they tested the building of the truck now.

And then after trying to build the entire 5000 trucks from Fitzgerald, Nikola has  an investment plan of building an manufacturing plant (still there is no info where is the location – going to be announced at the end 0f 2017)

Nikola Two – the electrified hydrogen truck they are building has 100% zero emissions and a 1200 mile range with hydrogen powered.

Software & Loadboard – Nikola Shipments

It’s going to be a solution for freight broker to basically upload all the freight in that platform so they do business with carriers all across US.

The best part about the software from the driver perspective is everyone gets access to it for FREE in the truck.

So the interior of the truck is so amazing that it has a massive 21 inches screen so the drivers have the ability to pick any load he has on the load board of Nikola Shipments and doesn’t need to worry about the dispatching.

The system is integrated with all the service centers, hydrogen stations, and available shipments right away from the dashboard screen from the truck and the CEO mentioned that this will allow owner-operators to increase their income by even 50%.

So that’s a quick overview of what we’ve learned about the new auto transport products that owner-operators are dreaming about.

Every owner-operator should watch the previews on youtube right now.

The Auto Transport industry is still just starting up with technology – technology is still young in this world, so owner-operators, drivers, dispatchers, brokers never ever give up!

Until next time.

Happy Hauling,

Technology for car hauling? It’s just happening

From the White House published the report -between 2.2 and 3.1 million car, bus, and truck driving jobs in the US will be eliminated by the advent of self-driving vehicles.

Stephen Hawking says that that rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative, or supervisory roles remaining.

At the same time, Guruduth Banavar VP and Chief Science Office at IBM mentioned:

“If you were in the same room with me and I had a whiteboard, I’d draw a graph,” he explains. “If you think of the distribution of expertise as a bell curve. If the high-end of expertise is on the right side and the low-end is on the left, there’s a whole lot of medium-level expertise in the middle. That’s going to shift to the right. What we consider today to be high-level expertise jobs will be taken by people who use machines in the future to fulfill some of the expertise needed.”

Actually, technological advances over the next two to three decades and will ease up the life of owner-operators.

As technology increasingly automates basic driver duties, the transportation industry will see:

  • Increase the efficiency of  car hauling operations
  • Reduce the accident rate of car hauling and transportation in general
  • Less stressful and tiring for drivers, dispatchers and transport managers

David Heller, head of regulatory affairs for the TruckLoad Carriers Association accentuates the fact that with automation he still doesn’t see the replacement of the person behind the steering wheel, and truckers will become a lot more efficient.

We already the efficiency in driving a regular vehicle with

  • Basic Assistance Technology
  • Automated Transmissions
  • Cruise Control with predictability
  • Sensors & Cameras to integrate automated braking

Automation increases and the transition to self-driving trucks will happen, but owner-operators will stay remain a businessman, a technician, a skilled driver, a salesperson that will manage the operational stuff.

The real truth is innovation is here, it’s just happening without asking your permission.

That’s why we do actually do technology as this is how everything is going to work in future.

Car hauling is not going to disappear, it’s only to get more automated and efficient with top notch technologies.

So get on onboard, adapt to it and start opening yourself to learning all the stuff you need to not be one of those 2,2  – 3,1 million.

As always, be great!

ELD – Basics of Electronic Logging Device

In the auto transport industry, there’s been a lot of development and research in the transport industry about ELD.

ELD stands for Electronic Logging Device.

Take a look at more history insights about the ELD last years:

This means serious preparation as independent owner-operators is likely to gravitate to a baseline compliance device. They can benefit from additional functions such as IFTA data collection, making mileage tracking automatic and easily reportable.

The exceptions to ELD requirements will be the following:

  • Old model trucks (from 1999)
  • Drivers in drive-away businesses
  • Drivers operating under the timecard exception rule – short-haul 100 – 150 miles specifically.
  • Drivers who keep logbook but work less than 8 days in 30 days

The core basics of the display of an ELD are:

  • Driver First Name and Last Name
  • ELD Username
  • ELD Malfunction Status
  • Total Engine Hours
  • Miles for each driving period
  • Data Diagnostic Status for the authenticated driver

The specific data recorded is:

  • Date & Time
  • Location
  • Engine Hours & Vehicle Mileage
  • Speed & Distance
  • Driver Login
  • Vehicle Identification & Authorized Carrier Identification

All events are recorded:

  • At start & finish
  • When changing the duty status
  • Once per hour why vehicle is operating
  • At the start & end of personal use or yard time

On FMCSA if you search for more information you’ll clearly see this the Phase 3 – full compliance phase with the punch line that after December 16, 2019, all drivers and carriers subject to the rule must use certified, registered ELDs that comply with requirements of the ELD regulations. So after that FMCSA advice is to take advantage of their specific training like classrooms, webinars.

So far for general info of ELD – that’s it. We are always keeping an eye behind the curtains to see where the industry goes so we are going to keep everyone updated with our research.

As always happy car hauling and until next time.

Car Hauler Guide to make & save money

So you want to learn how to make & save more money as a car hauler?

Imagine what would be like making additional $ on top – from 7 strategies we have discovered that works for the majority of auto transport professionals.

Here there are the strategies on how to make & save more money as a car hauler:

  • Organization
  • Less Paperwork
  • Efficient Invoicing
  • Follow-up and Updates
  • Analytics
  • Trip Planning
  • Minimize False Claim Damages

Let me guess you want to get to that X amount net profit monthly?

Use & Practice Organization

Top 1 is to have a functional system or create a system based on best practices that will give the opportunity to manage easily your top 4 business growing factors or revenue streams.

In the car hauler business the top 4 things that will bring you revenue are:

  • Drivers  –   having great relationships with these people will represent a critical factor for your business to grow, also assign loads and dispatch it in the easiest ways possible for them, with detailed notifications and support on the trip
  • Trucks  –  the core equipment that is key to the economy of every car haulage company needs to manage the maintenance, oil, suspension, service records, the inspection, insurance
  • Trailers –  hauling 10 cars  with different weights and dimensions, VIN codes, models needs technical organization and also professional loading and unloading
  • Load –  if you own this part right here you will skyrocket the revenue you currently make on your loads you deliver, you can check out List of Top Load Boards for Car Haulers in our recent blog post

Minimize Paperwork

How can you make more money by minimizing paperwork?

The principle is extremely easy to grasp in every type of business “Time is Money’’.

If you manage to save only 1 hour a day by eliminated the huge amount of paperwork you do every day, you will literally save more than 300 hours per year, that’s 12 business days.

Sounds good to save 2+ weeks per year to produce some more money in that time and not do much of your boring paperwork! Extra 2 week Paid Vacation? Heck Yea!!!

In your car carrier business, timing will realize a lot of value. When you send that invoice as soon the load is delivered, you will have a greater chance of having all the necessary information about getting paid, as you have all the information you need right there and will not have to go back and look for that invoice in your paper files, or under the seat, glove box, your pet’s bedding, wherever else? Also making your terms and conditions as clear as possible to the customers is of much help, but at the same time include all of the pertinent details in the document necessary to that customer. Being able to invoice as you delivery can help you get paid 12 days faster on average, so maybe you can skip dropping 3-5% on that money factoring company just by implementing the right strategy using the best tools. Think what you can do with Free 5% a year BONUS? Many 1 trucks, 3 car haulers start saving $3000+ a year, just by solving this issue.

Follow-up and status update

One of the weak links in car haulage is following-up! Why? Because they don’t know what to say.

A lot of confusing questions appear such as ‘’ when I need to call?’’, ‘’ what to ask?’’, ‘’who do I need to call?’ Organize your call list, have a basic script for calls, commit to your follow-ups and be extremely timely and persistent with them. Updating and following up as soon as possible is one of the top practical advice to get the fastest results possible and set your company apart from a sea of “rookies” who lose repeat business by not following up.

If you don’t want to follow-up with customers you won’t stay connected and you will loose business.

Knowing your numbers – analytics

To make more money, you need to have a clear financial target. You always need to know where is your company in terms of expenses, revenue, net profit, revenue per mile, revenue per vehicle mile and other metrics to get you to the point you want to be. Also by knowing your numbers, you are identifying your top weak points and problems and your strongest links, that way you will consider which problems you need to solve in your day-to-day operation.

Reverse engineer on how many vehicles you need to ship on weekly basis to get to that monthly net profit.

Trip Planning

Optimal route planning sometimes is neglected because of the variety of delivery destinations and time it takes, due to complexities and delivery windows.

Every car hauler needs a map system allowing them to view an address and locate that destination and route more easily, even with multiple intermediary stops.

Tools like navigation, map dragging, zooming, detailed and always up-to-date is fundamental to such a system. A good combination of the truck capacity planning and route optimization will reduce fuel and toll charges. Planning your Trips ahead considering best routes, stops, bridges, time windows, vehicle characteristics and more can literally mean if you will make it break it on the trip, or be able to make it home to your loved ones that Friday afternoon after being done with all your car deliveries on time.

Minimize false damage claims

The main thing to do is to take pictures of every dent or scratch on the body, interior, wheels and glass before you load the car on your trailer.

That way you will truly minimize the false damage claims, by presenting that you have inspected the car with the pictures from all angles.

Another way is selecting your customers, shippers, dealers based on professionalism and rating in their service and the relationships they have previously formed.

Focus on these things as your car shipping company grows and let us know how they changed your results.

Hoped it helped and thank you very much for reading CarShipIO blog.

Until next time!
